Extra credit is available to help you practice and reinforce many of the things that we have learned in class through real life usage and is an opportunity to give your grade a little boost. The internet extra credit must be completed and turned in within the timeframe that we are studying that chapter, (no sooner than the first day we start the chapter and no later than the day of the chapter exam). The extra credit activities are the ACTIVIDADES INTERNET (not the self-test activities). They are below the interactive games and the self test on the publisher's web page.

Extra Credit Option #2 (up to 30 pts. possible)
You will choose a country from the list to research.
This project will allow you to use your creativity. I want this to be a learning experience. I want imagination, creativity and vivacious thinking! I want YOUR “personal best”!
Our library and the Internet are bursting with resource materials waiting to be discovered by YOU, an imaginative, creative geography student. Open the doors of knowledge and experience all the countries of South,Central America, and Europe have to offer! Use index cards to jot down and prepare notes for your report if you will be orally presenting it to the class for the additional points.
Scenario:
You work for a prestigious advertising firm. You have been hired by the United Nations to create their highly acclaimed Calendar of South and Central American Countries for the year 2010. You will be competing with other advertising firms for this honor and must be sure to submit the best calendar project.
Premise:
You will create a 2010 calendar for your selected country. Your calendar will present important information about your selected country. You will choose from the following countries and you must approve your choice with Sr. Shellman before any work is started.

Requirements:
1.Final Copy of calendar is to be in ink, printed neatly, typed, or printed.
2.Make an attractive cover for your calendar.
For each month you will have to research an aspect of that country’s geographical, cultural, linguistic, or political heritage.
Cover
1.Original creative Picture of your country. It may be hand drawn, copied from a computer, cut from a magazine, etc.
2.Original Title of your calendar. (hint: simply writing the name of your country on the cover is not enough
3.The names of the students in your group and section.
The main body of the calendar will have 12 parts (obviously), one part for each month for each month of 2010. For each month you will have to research an aspect of that country’s geographical, cultural, linguistic, or political heritage.
4. When you finish your calendar, make a Table of Contents after the cover and locate all the important concepts/ topics by month.
January - Map
A map showing the physical geography of your country. You should show
mountains, rivers. volcanoes, etc. You should indicate the climate of your 
country and its weather patterns. You should locate important cities in your
country, (don’t leave out the capital) and
points of interest like vacation spots and historical sites. You will “visit” at 
least 5 cities/points of interest and place them on your map

February - Trip
Using the conversion scale, you will convert $3000 US dollars into country’s
currency and describe how you could spend it in each city/point of interest
you visit. Your math teacher may help you do these calculations in Math
Class!
March - Principle Products
List and illustrate the principle things your country grows and makes, Use
drawings and pictures to illustrate these items. Be sure to list at least one or
two things your country is famous and / or noted for.
April - Language
Research and list at least 10 commonly used words or terms in your
country’s language. Think of at least 5 phrases you would need to know to
“get by” during a visit to your country and translate them into English. For
example one important phrase might be “Where is the bathroom?’
May - Clothing
Research and illustrate the native dress or clothing in your country. Illustrate
and describe at least two or three costumes and / or articles of clothing.
June - Historical Figures
Research and illustrate at least two or three famous heroes (or villains) from 
your country’s history and briefly describe their accomplishments.
July- Leaders and government
Describe your country’s form of government today.
How do they govern their citizens?
Who are its leaders?
What are their titles?
Illustrate (draw) to emphasize your facts.
August - History
Describe and illustrate your country’s past. For example what does its name 
mean? How and when was it founded? How old is it? What are a few critical
events in its past? Illustrate where possible.
September- Food
What are your country’s native foods Describe them. What do they taste 
like?. Find the recipe for at least one of your country’s native dishes and
explain how it is prepared.
October - Education
Explain how children are educated in your country What are their 
requirements? What do they study? How ‘s their system different from our
system here in the USA? Identify and locate at least two or three of their
most famous universities.
November - Passport
Explain what a passport is and what information is required on the passport
application. What does it cost to obtain a passport in the USA? Where do you
get the application? Are there any restrictions on travel to or from or within
your chosen country? Explain them.
December - Puzzle
Compose a ‘fun” puzzle about your country. It may be a seek and find / word 
search or a crossword puzzle or scrambled word. etc. There should be at least
fifteen clues or questions in your puzzle. Place the answers on the page,
upside down. written very small somewhere on the page.

Dimensions MUST be 12 inches tall by 15 inches long, and made of cloth not paper. Get approval with me for the countries before starting on the project.
REMINDER: The extra credit will not be added into your grade until the end of the semester and the maximum extra credit allowable per semester is 50 points from some combination of the above four options. Be sure and remember that the half hour tutorial MUST be completed before any other extra credit is done. Don't forget the deadlines (Jan. 7, and May 22). Have fun!
